TL;DR: For technology to be truly successful it must make us better.
I think doom scrolling and short form video will be the smoking of 2050. Research is beginning to demonstrate scientifically that the astronomic rise of short-form content is leading to memory issues, mental health concerns, and more.
It is so widespread now that many young people are opting out of the chronically online consumption pattern. While they are a minority I think it represents an interesting shift towards living life in the real world being a status symbol.
To be clear, I don’t think social media is going away anytime soon, but what I do believe is that we are about to see a dramatic swing in the way of more balanced consumption being more desirable.
As we consider how to use technology to accomplish our goals, I think we need to stop and ask ourselves how what we are building enables people to live a better version of their real life rather than giving them one more reason to keep scrolling.
