TL;DR: The more flooded the marketplace, the more valuable curation becomes.
The Lens: When I was young, we had one TV and the choice of four channels. If there was nothing I wanted to see, I simply didn’t watch anything.
Now there is a practically infinite library of content available on any one of the 6 devices in my home.
The same thing has happened in many other industries too, we now have more options than ever; The problem is, more options are only a benefit until they become noise that you need to filter.
As a result of the infinite optionality we now live with, whole industries have popped up to assist our decision making. Google and Yelp reviews, concierge services, personal grocery buyers. Brokers, SEO and PPC services. All designed to either leverage or filter the “noise” we wade through on a daily basis.
This should inform how we do ministry as well. As a church we have a worldview that we use as a filter to evaluate options, this means we don’t need to be overwhelmed by so many competing ideas and we can help others make sense of the world. I believe we greatly underestimate the value of that curation.
